November 18, 2011:
Viking Seminar for the Renaissance Society, CSU Sacramento
We've been invited to participate in a session of a seminar on the Vikings presented by
Elaine Bjørgan Duxbury for the Renaissance Society on the CSU Sacramento campus.
We'll present a modified version of our
PowerPoint presentation, insert the Viking Art of war into it, and lay out our
usual weaponry and artifact exhibit. The class runs from 1:00 PM until
2:45 PM.
Here's the course
syllabus:
Recent archaeological and genetic findings are transforming what we know about
the Vikings. This seminar will examine the origins of the Vikings, their
explorations and raids, and the shipbuilding and seafaring skills that made
their travels possible. We'll look at their towns, trades, and transformation
from raiders to settlers. Our exploration of Viking culture will include
clothing and jewelry, language and poetry, and religion. Women in the Viking Age
will be discussed. We'll see films and look at books and artifacts representing
the Vikings and present-day re-creations. And we'll discuss the myths and
realities of these early Scandinavians.
Here's a note about the class
from Elaine:
"I'm no expert--we are all learning together. So far the videos
they've seen are the NOVA hour, the Kirk Douglas movie trailer, and two of the
lectures from the Great Courses. We'll see several more of the Great Courses
lectures, as well as one of the History Channel/A&E/etc. videos appropriate for
Leif Erikson Day. We'll have presentations on various topics from some of the
class members, including runes, jewelry, seamanship, Norwegian Vikings and
dating methods. I'll do one on Jorvik. Discussions of all as we go. As you can
see, it's a most eclectic approach."
We'll meet at CSU Sacramento at
11:15 AM at a parking area to be determined and transport our stuff to 108
Douglass Hall, where the seminar will be held.
